Become What You Pray For

John & Matilda Joachim · June, 2026
If your only daughter were to marry a man exactly like you, would your heart be at peace—or troubled? If your only son were to marry a woman exactly like you, would you rejoice—or quietly hesitate? This question is uncomfortable, but it is revealing.

Many desire for their children what they have not committed to becoming. A man prays for his daughter to find a loving, patient, and faithful husband, yet falls short of those same virtues. A woman hopes her son will marry a respectful and gracious wife, yet struggles to consistently embody those qualities herself. This is the contradiction we often ignore—expecting what we are not becoming.

Scripture already reveals this pattern. King David burned with anger when his daughter Tamar was violated, yet he had once taken Bathsheba and destroyed her marriage with Uriah the Hittite. His anger was not wrong—but it was selective. And that is the danger: to hate in your children's lives what you have learned to excuse in your own.

Dear husband, become the kind of man you would confidently entrust your daughter to. Dear wife, become the kind of woman you would gladly welcome into your son's life. What you embody, you silently teach, and what you tolerate in yourself, you permit in your home.

If your life can not pass the test of your own child's marriage, then something must change—and it must begin with you. Become the kind of husband you would entrust your daughter to. Become the kind of wife you would joyfully welcome into your son's life. For in the end, the prayers you pray for their future will only carry weight when your present life agrees with them.
